When
we add two small numbers together,

we
can think of it as putting two small groups of stuff together:

Put
5 together with 4 and you get 9

When we put two numbers together,
it's called adding.

In math
talk we use numbers and this:

+

It's called a "plus"
sign.

Example:

5 + 4

To say what we get, we use this:

=

It's called an "equal"
sign.

Example:

5 + 4 = 9

More
Examples:

3 + 6 = 9

2
+ 8 = 10

There are a
couple of ways to write this stuff.

Sometimes we write:

2 +
8 = 10

But
most of the time we write:

The way adding works, it doesn't matter
which number you write first.

You get the same answer either way:
